80 Subbotniki known to be buried at
|
|||||
Home of Peace Memorial Park is located where the the Santa Ana (I-5) and Long Beach (710) Freeways meet in East Lost Angeles. Entrance is from Whittier Blvd. Click on the map to enlarge it. It's next to 2 other cemeteries. You can easily see it going south on the Long Beach Freeway. Records for 80 Subbotniki buried in this cemetery were extracted from a CD produced by Margaret Jayred Schulz for the Southern California Genealogy Society in February 1998. The data shows name, grave location, age, gender, place & dates of birth & death, burial date, occupation, and mortuary comments. Though there is a "Subotnick" section, only 32 of the 80 (40%) are buried in it. All but 19 were born in Russia. 11 were children. All but 4 died in or near Los Angeles. The earliest born were in 1855. The first burial shown was in 1911, and the last was my uncle John buried in 1983. And 8 appear to be buried with charity, benevolence. The 23 surname spellings listed represent 15 Subbotniki surnames, with 4 being changed from the Russian:
Schulz reports: In 1855 The Hebrew Benevolent Society of Los Angeles purchased land near the present Chavez Ravine* to be used for a cemetery. No one is sure exactly where the old burial ground was located. However, according to the records, the first burial occurred in 1858. In 1891 the Home of Peace Society was founded by Jewish women of Los Angeles for the purpose of caring for and maintaining the property. In 1902 the present location on Whittier Blvd. was purchased by B’nai B’rith Congregation. The 360 graves were removed from the old cite to the new grounds between that time and 1910. The site was originally called Home of Peace Cemetery, and later the name was changed to Home of Peace Memorial Park.
Further research reveals: International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies — Cemetery Project Home of Peace Memorial Park: Home of Peace (new) Cemetery (aka Hills of Eternity Cemetery). Opened in current location in 1902, this original Jewish cemetery was founded in 1855. Approximately 50,000 burials by 2000, the site is owned and operated by Wilshire Boulevard Temple (Congregation B'nai B'rith). Home of Peace is the successor to the first Jewish cemetery in Los Angeles originally founded as the cemetery of the Hebrew Benevolent Society in 1855 in Chavez Ravine*, it was moved to its current location in 1902. The remains of the 360 Jews buried in the old cemetery were moved between 1902 and 1910. The principals who started the Hebrew Benevolent Society Burial Ground were the same people who started Congregation B'nai B'rith that took over the cemetery in 1902. About 1870, Jewish women maintained the Hebrew Benevolent Society Burial Ground and called themselves the Home of Peace Society.
* Note from the USC Cemetery Archive: "a Jewish cemetery, perhaps with the name 'Home of Peace' began in 1854 on what has been described as reservoir land, apparently in Elysian Park where the Armory is located." Also, Chavez Ravine is a hill north of downtown Los Angeles on which the LA baseball stadium was built.
Konnoff & Moiseve Genealogy Page My Great-Great Grandfather Stephan Ivanovich Moiseve ( 1855 to 10/11/34) [#36] and his wife Irina Fedotovna Lidyeff [#34] (4/20/1855 to 11/30/39) emigrated from Tbilsi Russia. Originally, they lived in Petrograd. They settled in Los Angeles and lived at 1619 East 4th Street; they are buried in the Home of Peace Cemetery. ...
Tourists often visit Home of Peace Memorial Park to find the graves of famous Jewish actors, movie mogols, and politicians, including 2 of the "The 3 Stooges", and 3 of the Warner Brothers. Over 400 internments are listed at Find A Grave.com. |
