Russians in Armenia

| В Армении уже более полутора веков живет община русских, которые считают эту землю своей родиной. Русские принадлежат к религиозному течению молокан. Они называют себя истинными последователями христианства и считают, что история нового праведного человечества начнется в Армении -- у горы Арарат. Практически второй Ноев ковчег. Сектанты впервые согласились предстать перед телекамерой. По крайней мере, так уверяют наши армянские стрингеры. Движение молокан возникло в России во второй половине 18 века, когда крестьянин Семен Уклеин прочел Библию и решил, что попы проповедуют не по священному писанию. Крестьяне- еретики навлекли на себя гнев властей. Репрессии на вредную секту продолжались вплоть до 1830 года, когда молокане переселились в Армению ждать второго пришествия Христа. Сами молокане себя раскольниками не называют. Они говорят, что их вера -- истинная, незапятнанная и чистая, как молоко. И хотя сейчас в России молокан никто не преследует за убеждения, они не стремятся покидать Армению. | Already for more than one and a half centuries, a Russian community lived in Armenia which considers this ground as their native land. The Russians belong to the religious denomination of Molokans. They call themselves true followers of Christianity and think that a new righteous event for mankind will begin in Armenia, at Mount Ararat -- actually a second Noah's Ark. For the first time the sectarians agreed to appear before a television camera. At least, so they assured our Armenian stringer [part-time correspondent]. The Molokan movement arose in Russia in the second half of the 18th century when the peasant Simeon Uklein read the Bible and decided that priests do not preach by the Holy Scripture. [Much more was involved. See Klibanov and Breyfogle for more details.] Peasant heretics had drawn upon themselves the wrath of the authorities. Reprisals on the harmful sect proceeded up to 1830 when Molokans were moved to Armenia to wait for the second coming of Christ. [Sectarians were moved to the Caucasus to isolate their "infectious heresy" from the Orthodox. See Breyfogle for details.] Molokans did not call themselves dissenters. They say that their belief is true, spotless and pure, as milk. And though no one now in Russia persecutes Molokans, they don't want to leave Armenia. |
| Деревня Фиолетово в 60 км к северу от Еревана. Все пятьсот с лишним местных жителей -- русские. Это самое большое молоканское поселение в Армении. Община уже сто с лишним лет ждет пришествия араратского царства, в котором позволят жить только праведникам. | The Village of Fioletovo [literally "Violet" in Russian]
is 60 km [38 miles] north
of Yerevan. All 500-plus residents are Russians.

The community has already waited more than 100 years for the coming
of an Ararat kingdom in which only the righteous
people will be allowed to live. [On
the other hand, some Maksimisti Molokans in America believe that they
are in the promised land, which they call "Zion", and ignore those
left behind in Russia -- "Jerusalem". Furthermore, some who left America for Australia in the
1960-70s consider their location to be the best. Add to this the
debates between rural or urban, Northern or Southern Hemisphere, back
to
Russia or not, ...] |

Нашу съемочную группу хотя и пустили в Фиолетово, но рядовые поселенцы восприняли камеру в штыки. Молокане уверены, что телевидение -- от лукавого. Извращает нравы и поганит души. Поэтому в их домах нет телевизоров. Понадобились долгие увещевания духовного отца общины, чтобы сельчане не сторонились камеры. | Nikon Vlasov, a resident of the village Fioletovo: "Our ancestors lived here. Armenia is our native land. Where can we go?". Even though they let the film crew into Fioletovo, some simple settlers adamantly opposed the camera. Molokans are sure that TV is evil. It perverts their customs and defiles souls. Therefore in their houses there are no TVs. So the villagers would not avoid the camera, we had a long discourse with the spiritual father of the community. [The Original Constant (Postoianne) and Spiritual (Dukhovne) Molokans do not fear the camera as much as the Priguny or Maksimisti.] |

Самодеятельные богословы
считают, что рукотворное изображение
недостойно божественной сущности Христа. Молокане соблюдают
еврейский
закон: безделье по субботам и запрет на свинину. |
In Molokan huts there are no icons. The amateur theologians consider that a man-made image of Christ is unworthy of divine essence. [Calling them "amateur" is a sly insult.] Molokans observe Jewish law: no work on Saturdays and prohibit consumption of pork. |
| Армяне к молоканскому нацменьшинству относятся с уважением. Членов общины с удовольствием берут на работу. Говорят, что они не похожи на обычных русских. Однако, высокая моральность и нравственность молокан сохраняется только в общине. Те, кто ездят на заработки в Россию, как правило, возвращаются в Фиолетово с репутацией, изрядно подпорченной участием в мирских соблазнах. | Armenians treat the Molokan minority well and with respect. Members of the community are hired with pleasure [by others]. It is said that they are not like other Russians. A high code of ethics and morals is kept by a Molokan only when in the community. Those who go to Russia for work, as a rule, come back to Fioletovo with a reputation that was damaged by taking part in worldly temptations. |
